FROM CLASSIC ROCK

The Cosmos Rocks – what's it like?

Here's the Clog's quickfire preview of the new Queen + Paul Rodgers album:

The Cosmos Rocks, while characterised by having Rodgers’s raw blues in place of Freddie’s flamboyance, is undisputedly the work of Queen.

Not only can The Cosmos Rocks sit proudly in the Queen canon, it can also do the same alongside Rodgers’s work with Free and Bad Company.

The intro to opening track Cosmos Rockin’ is a call to arms reminiscent of Brighton Rock, with chugging riffs that welcome you into a raucous, typically Queen rocker.

As the album unfolds it rapidly becomes clear that all the components of classic Queen are here.

It’s a work of extraordinary confidence, taking the band’s familiar blueprint and casually expanding it to encompass the organic blues and visceral soul of Paul Rodgers.

Overall The Cosmos Rocks has more than enough power to take your breath away. Freddie’s legacy is in safe hands.

* Read a full review of Queen’s The Cosmos Rocks in Classic Rock’s October issue (No.124), on sale Wednesday, September 17. The album is released two days before, on September 15.

Goodbye my friend......

Seattle musician Joe Shikany was killed Monday in a freak accident at a lake near Spokane.

According to Spokane's KHQ-TV, the singer, guitarist and bassist had been attending a family reunion at a house on Lake Sacheen and was trying to secure a dock during a storm when a tree fell on him. He died later at a local hospital.

Picture
Joe Shikany played guitar with several local bands and toured with singer Paul Rodgers.

Shikany, a Spokane native, had an impressive resume. He played in a number of bands, among them Magic Bus, Sex and Violins, PowerCell, N'Sane, the Davanos and Spike and the Impalers. Shikany also toured with rocker Paul Rodgers, the singer for Bad Company, Free and a reunited Queen.

In 1992, Shikany, Steve Hannah and Lynn Sorensen founded Magic Bus, a classic-rock cover band playing songs of the '60s, '70s and '80s -- by Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, the Rolling Stones and other iconic bands. Magic Bus played at clubs, casinos, festivals and biker rallies.

In the late '70s, Shikany became a member of Bighorn, one of Seattle's most popular rock bands of the era. The powerful, guitar-heavy band opened for Van Halen, Boston, Journey and the J. Geils Band, but never took off nationally. Bighorn later evolved into Seattle new-wave band The Allies.

Shikany will be sorely missed by members of Seattle's classic-rock community.

Friends and fellow musicians gathered last night at Lake City's Rimrock Steakhouse, a popular hangout for local musicians.

Joe Shikany
He was a kind and loving person, one who's heart had room
 for the entire world
and Joe shared his heart and his passion of life through his music.
Joe will be tremendously missed by all that knew him...it is a tragic loss .
Joe always made me laugh each time I saw him.
We love you and will miss you now and forever
You will NEVER be forgotton
I still can't believe he has left us. !!

Fade Away - Bad Company

Lyrics: FADE AWAY

Fading colours, changing sounds
Shades of night come tumbling down
Bring tomorrow like yesterday
Fade away

Here I am, a wayward man
Following the light to a distant land
Come tomorrow, without yesterday
Fade away

High adventure I just begun
Fame and fortune got me on the run
Break off the way
Fade away, yeah

Oh yes I am a wayward man
Following the light to a distant land
Come tomorrow, without yesterday
Fade away

Oh fade away, fade away

This title is taken from Bad Company´s album, "Run with the pack" (1976/UK)

Free & Paul Rodgers - Guardian of the Universe

Casting an Eye on Eagerly Awaited Queen + Paul Rodgers The Cosmos Rocks CD Album

Having between them sold more than 300 million albums, it is only to be expected that the first studio collaboration between rock giants Queen and revered rock legend Paul Rodgers in the form of the upcoming album The Cosmos Rocks is one of this year's most eagerly anticipated.

For the music we will have to wait a little longer: the album does not reach stores until September 15 (October 14 in the USA), but for anyone wondering how Queen and Paul Rodgers circa 2008 visualise themselves the band this week revealed the cover art for the forthcoming CD album.

The thematic image is the work of award winning photographer Edgar Martins who has been hailed ‘one of the most influential artists of his generation working within the medium of Photography'. Widely represented internationally in various high profile museums, public, corporate and private collections, Martin's awarded books and series include 'Black Holes & Other Inconsistencies' and ‘The Diminishing Present', work, according to critical observers, ‘positioned in the grey area of fact and fiction, reality and allegory'.

So beyond Martin's striking cover image, what lies in store with The Cosmos Rocks?

Tantalisingly, the Queen + Paul Rodgers' point of view is:
"People really, truly playing together in the studio - you don't get that much these days. But, you will get it on the new Queen and Paul Rodgers album."
The Cosmos Rocks, featuring 13 all-new tracks written and recorded by Queen + Paul Rodgers, is released by EMI/Parlophone throughout the world excepting North America where it is a Hollywood Records release.
