Review No. Five by Celeste

I have found the fountain of youth!!

It happened on 08-08-08 at a few minutes after 8, At the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood FL.

First AND FOREMOST, I OWE PAUL AN APOLOGY FOR JUST HUGGING HIM AND SURPRISING HIM!!
I’M SORRY!! I HOPE YOU CAN FORGIVE ME.
IT’S NOT MY FAULT, REALLY!!
IT WAS THE AURA ALL AROUND ME- THAT THE BAND, ET AL CREATED!!!

NOW, let me take you back to the mid 70’s…

Caution – 70’s terminology used extensively!

When I was young lady, Bad Company’s self titled album came out in 1974. Bill, my boyfriend at that time, played it when I was at his house. Every time I was there, I asked to hear i t again. I also played it at home!! (The album went triple platinum – everyone had a copy!!) For the 1 ½ years, Bill and I were together, I heard it every week, with him; at home on my older brothers’ old stereo, that he gave to my sister and I. (The stereo was in my room, I was the older sister, after all!!) I wore the headphones that had a metal plug (1.5 inches Long X 3/8 inch Wide) that plugged into the front of the stereo and had the coiled up phone type cord attached to it and the headphones. Most teenagers did not have a stereo in their own room!! It was tuff and I was so cool! I had to stay close to the stereo receiver, so as not to try to rip my ears off my head with the clunky headphones or choke myself or tear my waist length hair out with the cord while dancing around the room. Nobody else could hear the music, just me!! I was out of tune and off key, but I sang with PASSION! They just heard me singing, every single word; moving to every beat, every single beat, no matter which instrument!! Who ever said you can’t dance to rock and roll doesn’t understand music, math and/or rhythm! I used to play certain songs over and over, moving the needle carefully so as not to scratch the album. I counted the beats to know exactly when to come in and sing my duet with “THE VOICE” – the one who emotes so WELL (!) the emotion and feeling of any song. I did not know Paul’s name back then – a travesty, yes, I know! His was the voice that transported me back to my first lover, Bill and the wonderful experience the music and its feeling gave to the relationship I thought would last for a lifetime. The emotions between Bill and I were captured, to me, PURELY, in Bad Co’s songs. I sure did feel like I CAN’T GET ENOUGH of the album and/or Bill. I was: READY FOR LOVE!! And I did: FEEL LIKE MAKIN’ LOVE!! Did I or didn’t I give in? Hum… a little mystery…
0D

Having lost my father, the math teacher, to a heart attack when I was 12, this album spoke to me, maybe not always literally, as the song was exactly written, but it still did, in a way to give me encouragement to be me and to move on, even though I missed my dad so much. I was Daddy’s little girl, and though I did not see any of the artists as father figures, the words to the songs felt written just for me!! I did not know the meaning the songs had to the composer, Paul, Mick, or Simon, I just knew I wanted to live my life THE WAY I CHOOSE, I was MOVIN’ ON and DON’T LET ME DOWN were my life theme choices!!

Paul Rodgers is the reason I thought I could sing!! I tried to sing exactly in time and tune to his voice: with the headphones on, I could not hear my own voice; I danced to each beat of Bad Co’s music, as I had to classical music for=2 0ballet recitals for nine years as a child! I was AWESOME! (Yeah, right on, man! rolling of the eyes, here!) At least I felt that way and it was Bad Co’s voices and music that gave me that feeling of exuberance and confidence! Albeit unreliably, in my vocal capabilities! Of course I sounded good; all I heard was “The Voice” - Paul!! And my fingers moved to every beat of the guitar as if I were playing an air piano!! Percussion was emulated thru my head, hips, feet and shoulders. My eyes were closed a lot, as I tried to “feel the music" (See ears and hair torn out and choking self from cord!) I was TOTALLY!! into the music!!

NOW – ON TO THE CONCERT ZENITH OF MY LIFE!!

Coming to Florida, on the airplane leg from OHIO to Charlotte, NC, I met a 12 year old young lady, and excitedly told her what band I was coming to see. Have you heard of Bad Co., I asked? No, she replied. I pulled out my MP3 player and let her listen to Bad Co.’s Merchants of Cool album, previewing a song at a time. She would listen intently, then either say, no or yes, she had heard each song. For Rock Steady, she looked at me with wide eyes and exclaimed, “That’s on “Guitar Hero”! For Shooting Star, she looked at me with even wider eyes, and with more excitement said, who hasn’t heard that song?”  A few of the songs, especially Joe Fabulous, she listened intently, longer than the usual few seconds before saying she had no knowledge of the song, and when asked if she knew it, said “NO, BUT I REALLY LIKE IT!” Over the years I have been told by several different generational teenagers of how lucky we were to live in the seventies; they wished they had lived back then!! YES, IT WAS AND IS, EVERY TIME WE RELIVE IT!! I just enjoy passing the music on, as I did to my own grown children and to this young lad y. We are not getting old, we are not getting old, repeat after me, until the music fades out!!

Sure, I had seen Bad Co. before at Riverbend in Cincinnati, OH with Foreigner in 2002(?) And Paul several times with his solo band and Queen, BUT, WOW what an experience 8-8-08 was! Best seat I’ve ever had, 5th row, 3rd seat from the stage extension into the audience (seat name: 7th Heaven), I could see the expression on all of their faces!! TRUE HEAVEN ON EARTH!! Paul always sings with so much depth of feeling and emotion and has such a good fun time! Mick and Simon, Len and Howard, all seemed to be having such a blast playing and singing too!! What a great job to have!!! When Paul sang ROCK AND ROLL FANTASY, I watched his face, his communication with the audience and turned and watched the audience too, who were ‘DANCING IN THE AISLES, SINGING OUT LOUD’ You would think Paul was communicating with every audience member, the way they reacted when he looked their direction!! All around Fantasyland Heaven!! I was in heaven, I thought Paul was pointing at me to his left near the beginning of the concert, I pointed back, then looked behind me to see if maybe it wasn’t me!! But I did not see anyone else, which seemed possible, so maybe he did recognize this face he hasn’t seen in a few years!! (I wish my husband’s memory was that good!)  I know Paul waved at me at Riverbend, because he imitated back to me, the large slow exaggerated wave I sent him from 10 rows out to his right, that evening! I was one of a few that were standing at that point of the concert, what was up with that, not standing! I did not see anybody sitting Friday, 8-8-08!! The energy of the crowd was exhilarating! The adrenaline and endorphin rush in the Hard Rock Live venue was levitating! There it is: THE RECIPE FOR THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!! I am still hovering above the earth, every time I speak about the experience! We all sang along to every song, with exuberance, love, passion and memories of days past!! Then…

All three original members of the band, Paul, Simon and Mick walked to the end of the stage extension and sang – SEAGULL!! That having been my childhood nickname (my brother said I flew around the house!), I has always felt the song was written, as if for me, from some of the lyrics and their application to my life! It was magical to see them sing and play so close to where I was sitting! The next morning, upon beach arrival at noon, rain started falling and a seagull flew in, sat on the sand close by, stared at me for some time, as if sending me a message before it flew… ‘ACROSS THE HORIZON, INTO THE MISTY MORNING LIGHT’ WOW, is this my weekend or what?

Just before they played READY FOR LOVE, Paul spoke to the audience about feeling the love from the audience, and I had tears in my eyes, Lucy later told me she did too!! I wondered how many others felt the same way!? At the end of the concert, after the last encore, I think, Mick bent over and kissed my hand and Paul cl asped it, and I his, with my other hand!! This completed my generational transport back to my youth! I was an adolescent for the next few hours, I am certain!! At the meet and greet, post show, I proved it. I had several thoughts over the few weeks prior, to plan verbal greetings, compliments, questions, etc. Did I go with any of those polite, mannerly, complimentary, yet reserved comments? OH NO!! Meeting Simon first, I was polite and mannerly, (after all, we had not had even minimal personal contact!) Then I met Paul and took complete leave of my senses and manners!! “I’ve waited so long to meet you, and if it wasn’t for Lucy, I wouldn’t be here now”, I said, speaking faster than the speed of light!! He graciously complimented Lucy, describing her depth of heart. Then I just hugged him, didn’t ask; just jumped right in!! I heard him let out a breath of surprise, then a good deep belly laugh!! (AGAIN, I’M SORRY) When I met Mick, still about age 16, mind you, I said, “You kissed me, now it’s my turn to kiss you!” I then hugged him and planted a kiss on his right cheek! At least I gave him some warning!! I actually got to see the smile on his face before I hugged him and he hugged me back! The next time I go to a meet and greet, I am taking a written list of what to say, so I can stay FOCUSED! I told them all of my personal experience with the 1st Bad Co. album, and then was moved along by Hard Rock security each time.

I had hoped to see and greet Howard Leese, as I had felt the music the same way, during an outdoor concert a few years back, in Blue Ash, OH, a Cincinnati suburb, as Howard played with Paul’s solo band. Howard saw me, rocking and dancing in the crowd, he engaged my eyes and rocked with me, as he played the guitar perfectly, to the beat I knew by heart, that I was hitting, note for note, with my hand up in the air where he could see it!! I got shy, and looked away, but the experience still “rocked my world” that he saw me, and wanted to rock with me!! I won’t get shy the next time! It was a compliment! I can’t wait! It will happen again! It will happen again! I sure hope so! I treasured that experience for my lifetime and…

I WILL TREASURE MY EXPERIENCE OF 8-8-08 FOR MY LIFETIME TOO!!!
I’LL BE TELLING IT THE SAME WAY WHEN I’M 80!!
OR WHATEVER AGE I GET TO!!

LAST but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST!!

A Heartfelt Thank you to the original Bad Co. band, Howard, Lynn and all the musicians!! All of the memories and great times, my heart a nd soul received, over the years to the music: came flooding back! The fulfilled experience, was and is, still with me and always will be!

A Bottom of the Heart Thanks to my husband, Dave, who encouraged me to come to Florida, without him, his business is just so busy this time of year!! He truly wanted to be there too! I get so much more vacation time than he does, he insisted I make the trip, knowing full well how much I needed my heart and soul rejuvenated. The confines and restrictions of my job and its stresses, had really taken a toll on me was resting heavily on my mood and attitude about the job, and life there. I’m lucky and truly blessed to have him in my life!!

A GIGANTIC Thanks to Lucy and Chris Crawford for taking and guiding me in the correct direction for the Platinum VIP ticket!! If it wasn’t for you and your input, I would not have been there, nor had the experience of my life!! How do you really say a sufficient thank you for tha t! Words do not seem adequate!

Thank you also to Barry, Jeff and Lucy, it was exceptionally nice to meet you, for the first time; Lucy, finally in person, to hear Jeff sing and all spend time together, whether we were laughing, talking, eating or talking music! I especially enjoyed the pronunciation lesson to correct my Midwest nasal pronunciation of Glasgow. When Lucy imitated me and said “Glass gow (rhymes with how) ool” (rhymes with fool), my eyes closed; my head rocked back and I howled with laughter!! Not knowing my love of language and its correct pronunciation, this was and is, just absolutely hilarious to me! Jeff pointed out the yodel effect, to saying “Glasgow” correctly and I think of that pronunciation aid, every time now when saying – “Gloss – gall”!! Both men were complete gentlemen and I appreciated that, too!! Everyone’s company was thoroughly enjoyed, significantly!! Thank you Lucy, Jeff and Barry!! Alert: BluesCatAlley.com stickers can be found all around Hollywood, FL or probably in a town near you!! LOL! So much laughter in such a short time, I needed that, Thanks!!

It was nice to meet several ARN.com members and to hear personal stories of your lives and how the Bad Co. band has affected your life!! Hello again to Tammy and Roy from Charleston, Ross from Miami, Carl, from north Texas (your photos are fabulous, I watched you taking some of them and wondered what they looked like!), Gordy from Scotland, and Kim and Tim (?) from somewhere up north.

Also, Hello to Sue and Tom from Hollywood FL area, probably future ARN members, if I had any influence on them!! Thanks to Mike and Tom for helping me get near the stage for Paul and Mick to shake or kiss my hand!! And to Angela, sitting next to me at the concert, “white on white French manicures Rock”!!!

Smile, It’s Contagious,

Review Four

I have to tell you, that show was one of the top concerts I have ever seen.
For comparison purposes, I saw Elvis, I saw Queen w/ Freddie Mercury,
I have seen the AC/DC with Bon Scott, Led Zeppelein in '77. Fleetwood Mac in '79.

Collectively you just blew us away wiht your incredible Perfomance
Not like touring/burned out, but a production that will make your DVD a Must

Thanks for the memories
ROB

Review No Three

"The show was great. My son and I flew from Atlanta the morning of the show and sat 11 rows back. Paul and Simon look so much younger than you would expect and in incredible shape.

Brought back really good memories from the good old days at the Omni.

Keep rockin' boys and cannot wait to see the DVD of the event."

Review No. Two From Ross

Not that I am a Grateful Dead fan, but it sure has been a long, strange trip…how I ended up at the Miami show of Bad Co is remarkable really, but mainly for its unremarkable-ness (my English teachers will cringe at that!).  But the fact that I was there on August 8, able to meet other Free and Bad Co fans, able to just hang out with Barry (Wholigans), Jeff (Blues Cat), Clive (photographer extraordinaire) and of course Lucy, among many many more, was just fantastic.  As I said to Lucy, even without the show, this was an experience I will never forget.  That I was able to talk shop about Koss, Free, Boz, Back St. Crawler etc. with other fans in Miami (not exactly the hotbed of British blues!) was surreal.

Unlike many others shown in pics or writing reviews on this website, I have never seen Free or BSC live, and have only seen  Bad Co once and that was way back when on their first tour at the Winter Gardens in Bournemouth.  So my perspective of Bad Co is less of a live band and more due to their albums (I’d buy the them very first day possible on or before their release) and my love of piecing together where the band members came from, what bands they played with, what special guests they had, etc., very much like a mental Pete Frame family tree jigsaw puzzle.   I grew up listening to a variety of bluesy bands that went on to great success:  Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green version), Jethro Tull, Led Zep, etc. along with Free and as my family moved from country to country, I always held onto those memories, those songs, those records.   My love of Free and Bad Co is all in my mind, so going to what was billed as the final, once and for all, never to be done again, concert was a thrill just in itself.  It was now or never for me.

As it happens, I moved to Miami a year ago, and when I heard that Bad Co was playing at the Hard Rock 60 minutes up the road, it was a no brainer that I would go.  Little did I know that tickets sold out SO fast that I was only able to get 1, much to the chagrin and annoyance of my wife and 10-year son (who loves to bang the back of my headrest in the car when we play the song Bad Company!).  For me, it was just another day at work, except that I left early, hopped in the car and trekked up to Hollywood.   And for those of you who have never been to Miami in August, it is not pleasant at this time of year – it was probably 95 degrees and very humid, so not exactly sitting-out-in-the-sun-getting-a-tan weather.

Anyway, I knew it was going to be a special day when, no more than 30 seconds after I got out of my car someone came up to me commenting on my shirt.  It is a reproduction of a 1971 Free concert ad with all the dates/venues on the back.  The classic Paul pose on the cover a la Heartbreaker, but a younger, skinnier Paul (see photo).   Throughout the night, people stopped me and we talked about the shirt, Free concerts, etc., it seemed like I was back in London in the mid-70s.  A few months ago, I happened to be wearing a Koss t-shirt and a friend (who plays with Santana) starting laughing at me.  Not because he thought I was a geek or anything, but as he said, “you’re wearing a shirt of a person that maybe only 5 people in Florida have ever heard of”.  This is the land of Gloria Estefan not blues-rock, and certainly not English guitarists who tragically died 20+ years ago!  So the fact that Bad Co was playing in south Florida was a shocker in and of itself.

Lucy had posted a note on the ARN website about meeting at 4:00 pm at a local ice cream parlor and when I first got there, there were only a few people there.  Which was lucky for me, because I was able to talk to Lucy and Jeff and Barry without rush, without pressure to ask the questions I’d always wanted to know answers to.  It was my first taste in 20+ years that I had been able to talk about bands I lived and breathed as part of normal conversation.   This continued for the next few hours, as well as after the concert into the night.  Like I had been starved for so many years, this was really a very exciting and satisfying feeling.  Tammy and Roy came down from Charleston, Celeste from Oklahoma, a few folks biked down from Toronto, others came from California, Ohio and the UK.  All these people converged from around the world to see Bad Co, and the vibe just became stronger and stronger.  This was going to be an EVENT, not just a concert.

The Hard Rock area is a pedestrian paradise for live music and open air bars, but you could feel the excitement about Bad Co.  No-one knew exactly why they were performing, what set they’d be playing, how’d they’d be together on stage, but no-one seemed to care.  It was Bad Co, and that was all that mattered.  Not that we needed any more encouragement, but when we got into the concert arena, we were told right away that the concert was going to be filmed for a live DVD to be released sometime next year.  So scream and be loud!!

When Paul first came out, stood behind the piano, and sang “Company, always on the run…”, we knew right there that this was going to be spectacular.  What better way to start the concert than by singing Bad Company the song on the album of the same name of the band of the same name.  Bad Co was here to rock and they did!  Feel like makin’ love, Shooting Star, Ready for Love….basically a greatest hits show from the first 3 albums plus more.  While I like to write (too much, obviously), I can’t do the concert itself justice.  Paul was awesome, his voice as strong and soulful as ever, Simon played with passion and looked absolutely happy, and Mick, while occasionally looking a bit uncomfortable, particularly when there was a slight bit of feedback on Seagull, was ripping it up.  I can’t say enough about how great it was to sing every song with everyone else all the way through the concert.  It was sort of like a rock’n’roll religious experience – everyone was together, singing and clapping as one.  Generally an older crowd, but it was not uncommon to see teenagers and kids in their 20s swaying along with the rest of us 40+ yr olds.  Truly a terrific experience.

After the concert, we all hung around backstage at the meet and greet.  I did not have the opportunity to actually go into the hinterlands, but Simon did come out briefly as did Mick, which was great.  I was lucky enough to get one of the limited edition signed posters which I will get framed right away.  This will serve as a visual reminder of the great time I had that night.

Unlike Lucy and the others, who all came from places far away, I had to drive home that night.  So after a few beers and watching a terrific trio play live outside the concert hall (they went from Abba to Yes to the Police!), I headed home.  Tired but on a high.  Thanks Bad Co!

xxxReview Number One

Review from Tammy in Charleston S.C

There are not many times when I'm at a loss for words, but this may be
one.  Bad Company's 08/08/08 reunion was a show I'll always be glad I
made.  I've managed to see Bad Co, Paul or Simon in one form or another
every year for the last 10 or so. This one beat them all.  I'm not sure
I can explain why, other than what seemed sheer joy among Paul, Simon
and Mick.  The energy was electric, the stage show fabulous. But more
than that, the emotions, both of the band and the audience, were free
and unadulterated. It's really hard to describe.  It was just an amped
up, ramped up evening!

Paul was, as he always is, amazing. His voice seems to get richer every
year.  It was a thrill to see Mick and his flying fingers again after so
many years. I think maybe I was happiest for Simon, whom I've had the
great pleasure of meeting and talking with a few times, and who strikes
me as the most open, warm person.  He played like I have never heard him
play before. While my focus is nearly always on Paul's soulful sound, I
found myself drawn again and again to Simon. He absolutely sizzled; his
excitement reeled you in, and if you saw him - if you saw them all
together - you could not help but burst with happiness for them all. A
tribute to Boz had many, including me, in tears.

Sharing the show with me was hubby Roy, who indulges me annually as I go
off with pal Nessa to see the boys somewhere.  Poor Nessa had another
commitment, but lucky for Roy - because there was no way I was missing
this show.  It's only the third time he's gotten to see Bad Company, and
he was blown away as well. He doesnt eat, sleep and breath Bad Co like
I do  - although he had no choice but to listen the entire 18 hour round
trip! - but he does like the band and always has. But he said he didnt
realize the energy at a live show was so high, and he too noticed that
the boys seemed especially energized.

We loved that they played some of their off-top-10 greats, like Simple
Man & Sweet Little Sister!  Going into the show, we didnt know they were
taping for a new DVD, either!  So when the camera & mic men approached
and asked how we felt about being there, we had no idea it would be for
the tape. Tho it will likely end up on the cutting room floor, it
tickled me silly when the sound man dubbed me the Deadhead of Bad Co.
Well, my horses arent named Six Gun and Rough Diamond - plus the dog
Rebel - for nothing! Attending these shows is perhaps a little
bittersweet for me, as I've been losing my hearing for some years, but
every note is etched deeply on me, and I can feel the beat all through
me, and that makes me appreciate it all the more. It's my connection
with the hearing world.

The Hard Rock complex is great, huge! Lots of rock activities going on,
including a Janis-fest at the theater next door.

Normally my annual treks include a Thursday local gig and a breakfast or
lunch after with Lucy & co. We spent that time on the road, so it ended
all too soon.  Tho I didnt get to see the usual fans we run into each
year, the night surpassed all expectations - except had I been able to
afford the backstage package! But the gold edition poster is awesome,
and now we can await the DVD and be thrilled over and over again.
