Learn About Mick Underwood

Peace,
Paul Rodgers, Stuart McDonald,
Mick Underwood

After the untimely demise of Quatermass, Mick heard on the grapevine that
Paul Rodgers was looking to form a new band after Free had abruptly and
acrimoniously split up. He had always admired Paul's singing, and the lure of the blues
connection was irresistable. Though they didn't personally know one another at the time,
Mick was able to make contact, and was invited down to Paul's house in Guildford,
where he, Paul and bass player Stuart McDonald jammed for a while and
decided that the project was a goer. Thus the trio Peace was born.

They spent several weeks at Paul's country house rehearsing in the attached barn.
As Mick recalled, "It was a great summer, and just listening to that voice, with
an acoustic guitar and a new song, was magic."

The Island Recording Company took care of the business side of things, and owner
Chris Blackwell himself produced some of their recordings at Island's Basing Street studios.
They made a good start on material for a debut album, and toured the UK
playing support for Mott The Hoople and getting a very positive audience reaction,
but it all unraveled when Paul succumbed to the inevidable and Free reformed, less than a year later.
Unwilling to lose the momentum, Mick lost no time in gathering together some good
musos and forming a band of his own, one which was nameless until hurriedly christened
Sammy after a dog present at their photo shoot! As Mick explained,
"We were desperate for a name, and had about 5 seconds to come up with one,"
though he readily admits to never much liking it

2009 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of Island Records, arguably the most prestigious record label in the history of British music. To mark this milestone the label is collaborating with Island founder Chris Blackwell to arrange the Island 50 festival.

Chris Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959 with capital of just £1000. Relocating to London in the early 60s Blackwell built the most diverse and enviable back catalogue of any independent record label in history. From Island's early Jamaican roots in ska and rock-steady, through the label's expansion to become the cutting edge of progressive rock in the late 60s, and then on to the signing of such international superstars as Bob Marley and U2, Blackwell brought to Island a unique vision and passion which still informs the label's approach to this day.

The Island label has been responsible for the careers of some of the biggest stars in music including U2, Bob Marley, Cat Stevens, Jimmy Cliff, Traffic, Free, Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny, Toots & The Maytals, John Martyn, Marianne Faithfull, Aswad, Tom Waits, King Sunny Ade, Third World, Roxy Music, Robert Palmer, the B52s, Sly & Robbie, Melissa Etheridge, The Slits, Steel Pulse, Grace Jones, Tom Tom Club, Pulp, Tricky, Talvin Singh, and latterly Amy Winehouse, PJ Harvey, DJ Shadow, Sugababes, Keane, The Fratellis, Scott Matthews, Paul Weller, The Feeling and Portishead.

Mott The Hoople Reuniting

For 40th Anniversary Concerts

1/16/09

Mott the Hoople, the British glam-rock band that had a huge hit in 1972 with “All the Young Dudes,” are reuniting to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s 1969 birth. Mott has scheduled two shows, October 2nd and 3rd, at London’s famed HMV Apollo (formerly the Hammersmith Apollo). The concerts mark the first time the original lineup — singer Ian Hunter, guitarist Mick Ralphs, organist Verden Allen, drummer Dale Griffin and bassist Overend Watts — has performed together in 35 years. “Why are we doing it? I can’t speak for the others, but I’m doing it just to see what it’s like,” Hunter writes on his Website. “Short of war, death, famine etc. …it’s ON.”

“All The Young Dudes” was written and produced by the band’s fan David Bowie. In fact, the song was originally authored during the Thin White Duke’s Ziggy Stardust sessions and shares some thematic similarities to Bowie’s iconic album. He originally offered the band “Suffragette City,” but they turned it down so he whipped up “Young Dudes,” and the rest is glam rock history. “Young Dudes” went on to become a hit single, Number 253 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll. Additionally, the All the Young Dudes album ranked 491 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list.

The band would never repeat the success of “Young Dudes,” and the original lineup ultimately split in 1974 (Even though the “band” with new members would release two more albums following Ralphs and Hunter’s departure.) Ralphs went on to form Bad Company with Free’s Paul Rodgers (now with Queen) and Hunter enjoyed a decent solo career, penning the song “Cleveland Rocks” and authoring the rock memoir Diary of a Rock n’ Roll Star. No word whether Mott’s reunion will be limited to the two Apollo shows or if a tour is in the works.
